On 12 September 2022, Mr. Vichai Puripunyavanich, Nuclear
Scientist (Expert Level), of Nuclear and Technology Research and Development
Center (NTRDC) of Thailand Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT) was an
invited panelist on a global stage at the GSSD Expo 2022 Side Event:
“Harnessing the Power of the Atom: South-South/Triangular Cooperation and the
Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Science and Technology.” This GSSD Expo event was the
11th in the series and it was the first time it was held in the
Asia-Pacific.
Along with other distinguished delegates, Vichai shared
knowledge and experience in nuclear science and technology in Thailand. Vichai emphasized
on plant mutation breeding in the aspect of food security. Other panelists came
from many organizations worldwide including the International Atomic Energy
Agency (IAEA), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the
Pacific (ESCAP), United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC),
Fiji Ministry of Agriculture, Vietnam Atomic Energy Agency. The Permanent
Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Thailand served as the session chair. TINT Deputy
Director Dr. Phiriyatorn Suwanmala joined the audience in the packed meeting
room.
Besides the panel discussion, TINT (NTRDC and Irradiation
Center: IC) managed an information booth with the IAEA, giving expo attendees
introduction to nuclear technology and displaying local food products which
participated in the Local Food Irradiation contest project.
The GSSD Expo 2022, which was a showcase event for South-South
and triangular cooperation efforts, under the main theme of “Advancing
South-South and Triangular Cooperation for Sustainable COVID-19 Recovery:
Towards a Smart and Resilient Future.” It was held on 12-14 September 2022 at
the United Nations Conference Centre, Bangkok. The co-hosts were the Government
of Thailand and ESCAP, and organized by UNOSSC.
